“Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.” Charles H. Spurgeon

This is the quote I am constantly coming back to when defining humility.

It’s not about belittling yourself.
It’s not about constantly telling yourself what a horrible person you are.
It’s not about walking through life feeling condemned and guilty
It’s not even about forgetting about yourself.

Humility is about understanding yourself correctly.
Understanding yourself in light of God.
Understanding yourself in light of man.

And I’ve found that in order to understand ourselves rightly, we must first begin with a right understanding of God.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
Colossians 1:15-23

He is all powerful.
He is the creator of all things.
He knows the end already.
He is eternal and outside of time.
He has all wisdom.
He is perfectly holy and good.
He is completely just.
He is completely gracious.
He is love.
He is quick to forgive and slow to anger.

As we meditate on just how glorious He is, we begin to see how small we are…and we begin to head down the path of humility before God.

Be blessed
