{This post is part of my 31 Day blog series Work Hard + Rest Well: Learning Obedience in the Rhythms of Work and Rest.}
“We are commanded to rest regularly. We’re commanded to rest daily. Because our rest shows our trust in God’s provision and care.”
Day 14
God commands our rest, but He doesn’t give commands randomly or brutally. He leads us gently. He leads by example. Because on the seventh day He rested. And if the Ruler of the Universe can afford the time to rest, then surely we can as well.
Genesis 2:2
God commands our rest, but He also promises His provision. He won’t ask of us something that He will not be willing to carry us through. And if He cares for even the birds, then how much more will He care for those he made in His image.
Matthew 6:27-30
God commands our rest, but He commands it in love. He knew that we would fail. He knew that we would try to lead ourselves and that we would try to act as if we were in control. And so He provided another way. A way of healing and restoration. A way for us to obey in His strength.
Romans 5:10
Our rest is a command from God but it is a command for our good. And it is a command that requires deep trust in God for us to obey.
We must trust His leadership, His provision, and His strength.
Rest requires trust in God.
Will we? Will we choose to trust and let that trust be shown through obedience? Will will trust and obey?
Will we rest?
Be blessed

That is a good combination of rest and trust! We might find all kinds of excuses, but it does come down to us not really trusting God that everything will be done in time. I am learning to really rest on Sunday, and I have found that my week after is a lot more filled with strength and peace. Thanks for sharing! – a fellow 31 Dayer
Thanks so much, Katha! It’s so fun to get to know and read along with so many other “31 dayers”. I agree with you about resting in Jesus on Sunday. It makes all the difference!<3

For those of us with a Martha personality, God knows resting is what we need to maintain a balanced spirit. Too much work leaves little or no time to hear God speak to our heart. As we grow older, working doesn’t have to be physical. It can be our time spent in an array of busyness: anything that keeps us from focusing on the Lord. Thank you for this gentle reminder.
Amen! Even for those of us who are younger, so many things including time spent on the internet can become “work” and clutter up our lives. Thanks for the encouragement!<3

Rest is so incredibly difficult sometimes. I appreciate your thoughts on rest and how much it is tied to trust. Like it will be okay if we don’t do this or that. God will help us find a way to accomplish what needs to be done. Great job! Found this very encouraging!
