The more we understand of our glorious God, the more our position becomes clear.

We don’t have the power to move mountains.
We can’t create life.
We are not perfectly just or perfectly loving.
We cannot understand the future.
We live for the briefest breath in the light of eternity.
We can never purify our motives completely.

We are sinners and we need Him desperately.

This sobering assessment of ourselves is just the beginning of understanding ourselves in relation to God, yet that is where we’re so prone to stop and call it humility. Understanding our frailty and need for God is essential to humility, but is not humility in and of itself.

Because weak and sinful is not our true identity anymore.

We have been given life.
We have been given access to power.
Wehave been given freedom.
We have been washed clean.
We have been justified.
We have been made children of God.

To rightly understand ourselves, we must understand our need and our privilege. Our sin and our sanctification. Our humanity and our glory.

If…“Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself.” …then living in shame and condemnation and self degradation is not humility. Because we are sinful yet forgiven, lowly yet glorified, fail yet empowered, simple yet made wise…and all of this in Jesus.

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
1 Peter 2:9-10

So who am I? Who are you?

We are God’s creation, sinful and selfish in nature, yet redeemed and forgiven by Jesus and elevated to the status of son of God…and none of this by our own work or efforts, but all by the work of Jesus for us.

If the understanding of these truths doesn’t draw us closer into a place of humility before God, then I don’t know what will. Essentially, this whole walk of the Christian life is seeking to understand more fully who God is and who we are and to live in light of that truth.
