We think we find freedom in breaking rules, in defying authority, in living our own way, in changing who we are. We think freedom is fought for.
But freedom is none of that.
Freedom is surrender.
Freedom is found in giving up.
Freedom is found in laying down our rights.
Freedom is found in obedience.
Not surrendering to culture, to government, to our own desires…
Freedom is found in giving our rights and giving over our lives to our Creator.
Because our Creator, He knows every intimate detail of every human being because He made every one of those details. And if He knows us so intimately, then why shouldn’t He know what is very best for us? And if He knows and if we say He is good, then why wouldn’t He tell us what is best for us…what will bring us joy and peace and happiness?
He did tell us.
He does tell us.
He listed these things in His Word.
We call them commands, rules, suggestions, old fashioned…but they are His love spelled out.
And He lets us choose.
We can choose to hold our breath tight and muscle our own way through life.
We can choose to let go and breathe His life from a posture of surrender.
We can choose to forge our own path and make our own choices and live however we want, or we can choose to obey His Word knowing that the things He has called us to truly are best for us.
“I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.”
David, man after God’s own heart new this.
In this Psalm, David declares over and over the joy that is found in obedience.
They are there, waiting for us to put down our theological arguments and our millennial enlightenment and our stubborn hearts and to simply obey Him. Will we?
Because breathing…breathing full and free…it comes from obedience.
